29th April Wednesday

Dear parents, this morning at 7am, I went through the topic on application of the Apostrophe with the girls. Prior to this, I have noticed that the girls were unable to understand the need/purpose of using the apostrophe and hence not able to use them correctly. Below are some common mistakes.

  • These boys' are the drivers sons.
  • These boys are the drivers' sons.
  • The childrens' computers are spoilt.
  • The children's computers are spoilt.
  • These are my youngest's sister books.
  • These are my youngest sister's books.
  • These boys' are Joan friends.
  • These boys are Joan's friends.

Some of the girls have difficulties identifying the categories of things/people in the sentence and therefore, unable to correctly identify the ownership of things to people or people to people.

(passage 1)

Once, there was a huge frog. He was so thirsty one morning that he drank almost all the water in the pond. The tadpoles and the fish in the pond were worried. They asked the wise owl for help.

"You must make the frog laugh," the owl advised. "When he laughs, the water he has drunk will come pouring out of his mouth."

So, the tadpole told a funny story. He laughed before he could even finish it. But the frog did not find it funny. Then, the fish sang and did funny actions. Still, the frog did not laugh.

Finally, the eel began to dance. As he did so, he accidentally tickled the frog's huge round belly. The frog began to laugh and lots of water came gushing from his mouth.

(passage 2)

James was thirsty when he woke up in the night. He picked up his pitcher and walked to the well in the yard. When he leaned over it, he saw the moon in the water.

"The moon has fallen into the well!" he exclaimed. He ran back into the house, grabbed a long rop and dashed back to the well. He threw the rope into the well. James hoped that the hook that was tied to the end of the rope would help him fish out the moon.

Suddenly, the hook caught something in the well. James pulled hard. He lost his balance and landed flat on his back. When he looked up, he saw that the moon was back in the sky.

"I've succeeded," James thought happily.

21st April Tuesday

Dear parents,

I offer my apologies for my absence from school for the whole of last week due to my children and my battle against Bronchitis. I am still coughing a little, so I reminded the girls not to come too near me unnecessarily. To make up for time lost, I have suggested to the girls about coming earlier for class on every Wednesday and Friday (until SA1) at 7am so that we can work on the English subject. This is really on a voluntary basis and I will be supplying extra worksheet for those who turns up. Students/parents who aren't able to commit to the time, I will pass the handouts to them during school hours, so not to worry about 'losing out'. Meanwhile, I will be working more on the oral components for the coming SA1. Parents can fit in by having more 'conversations' with them in daily issues. Purpose is to get them to speak up more readily. There is a circular with a reply form attached from NLB which I need the girls to return to me by Thursday 23rh April 2009. Do take note. As SA1 is approaching, I will concentrate on spelling for now and leave the dictation tests till SA1 is over. The girls are informed.

Outstanding Compositions

Yap Fang Ling

One breezy night, Jerry was staying up late as he was watching the football World Cup on television. Jerry was so engrossed in watching television that he did not realise how late it was. By the time he looked at the clock, it was already two o'clock in the morning! He hurried to bed, but was disappointed that he missed his show.

"Rrrrring.....ring....ring......." Jerry's alarm clock sounded. Jerry just shut the alarm and went back to sleep. At seven o'clock in the morning, Jerry's maid woke him up. At first, Jerry would not wake up as he thought it was only five o'clock but when his maid told him it was seven o'clock, he immediately shot up like a rocket and got dressed. He did not comb his hair nor did he brush his teeth.

Just as Jerry was about to leave home to go to school, he realised that his school bus had already left. Jerry was petrified and regretted staying up late last night. Jerry had no choice but to take a public bus to school.

Jerry was late again for school and had to go for detention class as he was late for many times. Jerry's form teacher informed Jerry's parents. When Jerry went home in the afternoon, he was scolded and given a beating. He was also suspended from watching television for a month! So now Jerry has learnt his lesson.

One late night, Tom was watching a comedy. He was sitting on the soft sofa in his hall and was enjoying the show which lasted beyond midnight.

The next morning, he woke up late at seven o'clock. He was shocked when he saw the alarm clock. He immediately raced to the toilet to brush his teeth. After brushing his teeth, he rushed down to the dining table to eat his breakfast. He gobbled down his food quickly.

After eating, he was shocked to learn that the school bus had left without him. So poor Tom had to walk to school quickly. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him. Once he reached his school, he was very late. The prefect took down his name and the Principal chided him for being late. He reprimanded him that punctuality is a virtue and how important it is to be punctual for school. After listening to the Principal, Tompromised not to be so late and had learnt his lessons well. He was promised to sleep early from then on.

"Ha Ha Ha!" laughed Tom till his sides hurt. Tom was watching a really funny movie. He was so engrossed with the movie that he did not realise that it had long passed his bedtime. When the movie had ended, he was stunned to see that it was already three in the morning. He rushed to his bedroom as fast as his legs could carry him.

The next day, when Tom woke up, he was surprised to see that the hour-hand was pointing at seven. He quickly rushed off to the washroom to get changed for school.

When he had finally finished his breakfast, he heard the screeching of van tyres as he was walking down. "Why did I have to wake up so late?" mumbled Tom.

Now that the bus had left, he lad to take public transport. When he reached school, Tom's teacher knitted her brows angrily as Tom was one hour late. From that terrible day onwards, he never dared to sleep late ever again.

One day late at night, John was watching television. He was so engrossed with the movie that the watched until midnight.

The next day, he overslept. By the time he got changed and was ready for school, he had missed his school bus. He was petrified about the consequences. He had to take a public bus instead.

When he arrived at his school, he had already missed assembly. So he was marked late. His classmate Ben asked him, "Why were you late today? You usually come early." John replied,"I overslept this morning because I watched a movie until midnight." Ben said to him,"You should not stay up late to watch television. It's bad for your body."

John regretted what he had done. Weeks and months passed and John did not oversleep again. All because of his best friend Ben's advice.
